Frogs harmed by electro magnetic radiation

Why frogs don't like mobile phones

http://www.abc.net.au/rn/ockhamsrazor/stories/2008/2175264.htm

Barrie Oldfield is a member and past president of the Western Australian branch of Men of the Trees and he discusses the decline of frog populations in this International Year of the Frog. He suggests that maybe electro magnetic radiation may be the reasons for this calamity.
Transcript
This transcript was typed from a recording of the program. The ABC cannot guarantee its complete accuracy because of the possibility of mishearing and occasional difficulty in identifying speakers.
Robyn Williams: A few days ago I came to possess for the first time a mobile phone. I found it in the street, as the rain poured down, its screen flashing bright. I picked it up and dried it, and put it in my pocket. A few minutes later it started to vibrate. Something of an intimate shock, I must confess, though I suppose you're used to it.
The person calling was, apparently, the owner's girlfriend. Her unclothed picture was a feature on the screen. We arranged to return the phone the following day. I handed it over in a bar and made a very fast exit. So I've had a mobile phone in my life, for less than a day. I do believe Barrie Oldfield would approve.
Barrie Oldfield thinks they're killing frogs. And I do believe he's serious. Now on the face of it, the radiation coming out of a phone is so tiny it wouldn't threaten a fragile flea, let alone a frog. What's more, though frogs are certainly being exterminated by something, it's happening in places like the Andes, where phones are few.
Finally there's a perfectly clear explanation of what's going on: Chytrid fungus, brought here by fronts used in pregnancy tests way back, went feral, and spread the disease. But Barrie Oldfield thinks otherwise. He's from Men of the Trees in Perth.
Barrie Oldfield: 2008 has been designated International Year of the Frog. Scientists all over the world will be comparing notes and undertaking broad-based research into why frog populations everywhere are in decline. May I add another theory for consideration?
Frogs are being microwaved.
Ever since microwave ovens were introduced, we have been protected from our own carelessness. Apart from printed warnings all over the ovens there is also a heavily screened door preventing the escape of the lethal radiation, and the door is interlocked with an isolator switch so that the oven cannot be switched on with the door open. Microwave ovens have been in common use now for a quarter of a century. Through daily experience we've come to learn the principle by which they work. Things that are perfectly dry do not heat up at all. You can't warm plates in a microwave. Food must be moist if cooking is to take place.
Why is this? Heat is a manifestation of energy. When an object becomes warm the molecules of which it is made start to jiggle about. In a solid object the jiggling is confined to a limited space. The hotter the object becomes, the more violent the jiggling, which tends to push out the boundaries of that space, which is why most solid objects expand slightly as they get warmer. But in a liquid the molecules can move around everywhere. Their jiggling knows no bounds, so they dance around all over the place. If the applied heat is in the form of a flame under the kettle, then the jiggling is random. Molecules of water dither and jiggle, bumping into each other, bounding up and down and sideways, some slightly faster than others, some becoming caught up in mini-whirlpools. The molecules of water dance around in a truly random way.
Because the principle of microwave cooking is the excitement of water molecules by the application of ultra-high frequency radio waves, the jiggling takes on a rhythmic pattern determined by the nature of the electromagnetic radiation being applied. Think of water molecules as being like people. On a busy market day people are milling around everywhere; that's equivalent to heating water in a kettle over a gas ring. But in a military parade all the (water molecule) people are in step and going in the same direction; that's like putting a cup of coffee in the microwave to heat it up. In fact many people can actually tell by the 'zizzing' feel of the hot coffee in their mouth that it has been microwaved.
Now let's consider this form of energy known as electromagnetic radiation (EMR for short). Some of it has been around ever since the sun began to shine. Visible light is EMR, so is infra red and ultra violet. This band of frequencies gets through the Earth's natural radiation shields. So Nature has made use of this particular section of the EMR spectrum since the beginning of life on Earth. But in the late 19th century and into the 20th century, James Clark-Maxwell, Heinrich Hertz, and Guglielmo Marconi brought into existence a whole new invention based upon EMR of lower frequencies; wireless telegraph had arrived. From Marconi's first demonstration of broadcast Morse Code signals at the end of the 19th century, it took hardly a generation before amateur, public and commercial broadcasters were opening up all over the world. England's BBC began transmissions in 1920, Australia's ABC in 1932. Of course it wasn't long before television was invented, the first broadcasts starting in 1936. And World War II gave us radar, so useful for search and rescue, navigation and multinova cameras.
Today the use of wireless telegraphy is universal. Not only radio, radar and television use electromagnetic energy to carry their signals, so do mobile phones, satellite navigation systems, GPS, movement sensors, motor car immobilisers, blue toothed computers, and of course microwave ovens. In fact most of our modern world would come to an abrupt halt if all applied EMR was to cease.
We have come to accept it in every application our technologists can turn their hands to. We readily purchase every new device that comes on the market that saves us time, or physical energy, or improves communication. We're especially seduced by any novelty that is fun to use or gives an instant reward, be it a snapshot on a mobile phone, or just a cheery 'ping' when we got the sequence of button pressing correct. We never give a second thought to the possibility of there being a downside, whether to our health or that of other living things on this planet. But maybe we should, because now we live in a constant smog of radiation.
But there are some quieter places on this planet. For instance you have probably enjoyed a car ride through some of our magnificent remnant forests. If you happen to have the car radio on, you'll have noticed the reception fades, or cuts out altogether. Why is this? Well the trees are aqueous bodies. The broadcast signal is being absorbed by the sap in their trunks, branches and leaves, and little is getting through to your car aerial. Aqueous materials cannot avoid being warmed up, agitated, set in unnatural rhythmic motion, when acted upon by EMR. Furthermore, as the absorption of radio waves by moist bodies takes place, a transfer of energy also takes place, and the intensity of the radio waves is reduced. So that's one reason why so many people enjoy being in our forests. The smog of EMR is somewhat reduced.
This smog is all around us all the time. It's in our homes, our gardens, our places of work, in the streets and in the country. It's everywhere. And just like X-rays, EMR goes straight through our bodies.
Now here's an interesting experiment, something that any 12-year-old schoolboy will love to do. We're going to make a tracking device that will lead us to sources of this invisible electromagnetic radiation around the home. No, you won't need any high cost equipment. All you need is a simple portable radio, the sort that runs off two or three AA batteries. What you do is switch it on and select the AM band. You might as well tune it in to Radio National. Now, turn the volume up to maximum. Having done that, just turn the tuning knob so you can't hear any radio station at all, you're now between the broadcast stations and all you will hear is what engineers call 'white noise', a sort of soft mush.
Now walk around your home, taking your newly acquired EMR Detector and listen for the interference it picks up. Start by taking it close to your computer. Take it around the back of your computer. If the noise is still strong, go into the room beyond and see if you can hear it through the wall. Switch the computer off and try again. You'll probably find that there's still a significant amount of radiation coming from it, unless you switch it off at the wall. Try it near the printer. Now go around the house. Take it close to the telephone. If you have a fax machine, try that. You don't have to be making a call for the EMR Detector to react. You'll probably find that it will even trace the telephone line down the wall, around the skirting board, to where it comes into the house. If you have a digital clock, you might even hear it ticking!
You can even stand in the middle of the room and for some inexplicable reason there will be a spot somewhere where the noise is loud and strong. This is possibly a node where two or three sources of radiation just happen to coincide, creating a peak disturbance, like ocean waves coming from different directions crashing into each other.
What your pocket radio is detecting is a relatively low level of both electric and magnetic fields. What you discover might just urge you to switch devices off at the wall when not in use, which won't be a bad thing either. You might like to write this up as a school project. It won't win you the Nobel Prize for Physics right away, but it could take you there eventually.
Now consider the microwave oven again. It cooks the food by exciting water molecules with electromagnetic radiation. So let's think of frogs. I think you'll have got my drift by now. Frogs are one of the most aqueous creatures on the planet. All frogs have a higher content of water than the average animal. Further, they depend upon their wet skin for survival. Some frogs such as our own Water Holding Frog, Cyclorana platycephalus, can survive long periods under hyper-arid conditions simply because they wear a wet suit; their outer skin traps water against their inner skin.
It follows therefore that the frog is the most prone of all animals to the adverse effect of electromagnetic radiation. We are quite literally microwaving them with our mobile phones and everything else that emits EMR in order to operate. One might think that fish being the wettest of all creatures would suffer first. Well they swim around in a relatively large mass of water and just as the forest shields your car radio from EMR, so fish are protected by the very water of their environment.
As I've mentioned, some EMR has always been around, of course. It's the very stuff that the Sun sends out to warm the Earth, excite the chlorophyll in plant leaves, and thereby lay the foundation for energising life on this planet. But solar energy comes in surges one day apart, and in the interval of night the ether waves are almost silent. Well they were until James Clark-Maxwell, Heinrich Hertz, and Guglielmo Marconi gave us this fantastic means of communication. Now we have 'electrosmog' day and night, all over the world. There is no quiet time and no really quiet place any more.
There will always be debate on the level of radiation which might be considered safe. There will also be those who contend that all radiation brought into being through the agency of man is dangerous insofar that evolution has had no time to adapt our living organisms to it in this short period of history.
I wonder why we assume that there is never a downside to all our wonderful technologies. If a frog would only hop on my shoulder and whisper in my ear, would it tell me that the strange zizzing sensation under its skin has left it impotent?
It might also tell me to keep away from Compact Fluorescent Lamps, at least until their EMR has been eliminated.
Robyn Williams: Barrie Oldfield, talking to frogs in Perth. He offers that hypothesis as a speculation. The question is: what does an engineer think of it? Well, we shall find out next week: should you jettison your mobile phone in recognition of this Year of the Frog? Well, not till this time next Sunday perhaps.
I'm Robyn Williams.

CHILDREN AND MOBILE PHONES: THE HEALTH OF THE FOLLOWING GENERATIONS IS IN DANGER
Moscow, Russia 14 April 2008

For the first time in history, we face a situation when most children and teenagers in the world are continuously exposed to the potentially adverse influence of the electromagnetic fields (EMF) from mobile phones.
Electromagnetic field is an important biotropic factor, affecting not just a human health in general, but also the processes of the higher nervous activity, including behavior and thinking. Radiation directly affects human brain when people use mobile phones.
Despite the recommendations, listed in the Sanitary Rules of the Ministry of Health, which insist that persons under 18 years should not use mobile phones (SanPiN 2.1.8/2.2.4.1190-03 point 6.9), children and teenagers became the target group for the marketing the mobile communications.
The current safety standards for exposure to microwaves from the mobile phones have been
developed for the adults and don’t consider the characteristic features of the children’s organism. The WHO considers the protection of the children’s health from possible negative influence of the EMF of the mobile phones as a highest priority task. This problem has also been confirmed by the Scientific Committee of the European Commission, by national authorities of the European and Asian countries, by participants of the International scientific conferences on biological effects of the EMF.
Potential risk for the children’s health is very high:
─ the absorption of the electromagnetic energy in a child’s head is considerably higher than that in the head of an adult (children’s brain has higher conductivity, smaller size, thin skull bones, smaller distance from the antenna etc.);
─ children’s organism has more sensitivity to the EMF, than the adult’s;
─ children’s brain has higher sensitivity to the accumulation of the adverse effects under conditions of chronic exposure to the EMF;
─ EMF affects the formation of the process of the higher nervous activity;
─ today’s children will spend essentially longer time using mobile phones, than today’s adults will.
According to the opinion of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, the following health hazards are likely to be faced by the children mobile phone users in the nearest future: disruption of memory, decline of attention, diminishing learning and cognitive abilities, increased irritability, sleep problems, increase in sensitivity to the stress, increased epileptic readiness.
Expected (possible) remote health risks: brain tumors, tumors of acoustical and vestibular nerves (in the age of 25-30 years), Alzheimer’s disease, “got dementia”, depressive syndrome, and the other types of degeneration of the nervous structures of the brain (in the age of 50 to 60).
The members of the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection emphasize ultimate urgency to defend children’s health from the influence of the EMF of the mobile communication systems. We appeal to the government authorities, to the entire society to pay closest attention to this coming threat and to take adequate measures in order to prevent negative consequences to the future generation’s health.
The children using mobile communication are not able to realize that they subject their brain to the EMF radiation and their health – to the risk. We believe that this risk is not much lower than the risk to the children’s health from tobacco or alcohol. It is our professional obligation not to let damage the children’s health by inactivity.

Letter to beekeepers re scientific research

Please find attached a letter addressed to all German, Austrian and Swiss bee keeping organisations from the Kompetenz Initiative, translated by hese-uk,. You might find this information useful. Sarah

We are not a campaign or pressure group but a scientific platform, set up to inform the public of the latest scientific research regarding the effect of electromagnetic fields on the environment and nature . We are looking particularly at the microwave radiation emitted by the now 50,000 phone masts and WIMAX towers in the UK that were put up from 1994. The microwave radiation emitted is up to trillions of times higher than the natural background levels in this frequency that existed up until 1994.

I hope you will take the time to read the attached letter and maybe publish it on your website. An English translation of the German 45 page brochure " Bees, Birds and People - The destruction of Nature as a result of electrosmog " will be available free on the web as soon as funding can be found for the translation.

You might also like to look up our website, supported by a large number of eminent International scientists advising hese-uk. The extensive list of published material concerning the effects of electromagnetic fields on bees might also be of interest to you .

Should you be interested in any aspect of our work or would like to discuss some of the findings listed with the scientists themselves, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

If we are talking about British bees being wiped out within ten years, we hope that all avenues presenting possible solutions should be examined to avoid disaster.

Varroa Mite or Electromagnetic Fields?

New Research into the Death of Bees

Letter to Beekeepers and Beekeeper Associations

Dear Board Members and Directors of Beekeeper Associations,

Dear Beekeepers!

The death of bees has for some time concerned beekeepers, the media, but also worried scientists who have affiliated themselves with our Kompetenz initiative for the protection of man, environment and democracy (www.kompetenzinitiative.de).

The disturbing phenomenon is presently predominantly attributed to the Varroa mite in newspapers and periodicals. It remains uncontested that there are such connections. Yet plausible arguments have been put forward explaining that the mite attack also occurs as a result of previous damage to the bees‘ immune system due to electromagnetic fields.

Dr. rer. nat. Ulrich Warnke, a biological scientist at Saarland University, can demonstrate this on a firm basis in his most recent publication Bees, Birds and People, The Destruction of Nature as a result of 'Electrosmog'. His findings are the result of his own research over a decade, a superior overview of the state of international research, however, above all the realisation of verifiable mechanisms which have a disorientating and damaging effect on the bees.

Many of you have probably already been referred to the publication. You can get further information from the attached leaflet or find it at the link www.broschuerenreihe.de.

Here it is our purpose to express our opinion about the current discussion concerning the damage caused by Varroa mites with some quotations from the publication. The third chapter is above all of central importance for the matter in question: "Mechanisms causing Disorientation and Damage" (p. 13-33).

The first finding, as explained, is formulated thus by Ulrich Warnke:

Other causes are also discussed, which aim to explain the disappearance of the bees: Single-crop farming, pesticides, the Varroa mite, mobile apiaries, corroded seeds, too severe winters, genetically modified plants. It remains uncontested that these also cause problems. Yet, the fact that for the last two to three years bee death has appeared rather suddenly and spread across countries, can be explained convincingly by none of the above mentioned causes. If the bees simply became excessively weakened and ill, they would have to perish in or in front of the beehive. Yet, in the case of this particular phenomenon, no sick bees are to be found. (p. 13)

Observations which have been made in areas of the especially strongly radiating antenna installations of the HAARP-project are also impressive:

[…] HAARP is the abbreviation for a military project (High-frequency Active Auroral Research Project), that is used by the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy. Near the city Gakona in Alaska stand 180 towers in an uninhabited area, which form an antenna complex. The frequency is about 2.5 – 10 MHz, the wattage is extremely high at 3 million Watts ('high power, high frequency phased array radio transmitter'). There is no stronger technical transmitter on this earth. […]

The effects of the HAARP transmission activity should above all be further investigated in Canada, the USA and in Europe. As it is exactly in these countries that the disappearance of the bees (CCD) was observed for the first time, a causal connection can no longer be excluded. The following coincidence relating to timing also points to this. In 2006 the transmitting power released was increased from the former 960000 watts to the 4-fold (3,600,000 watts), however, exactly in this year all affected transmission areas reported the disturbed homing ability of the bees.

Dennis van Engelsdorp of the research institute American Association of Professional Apiculturists (University of Pennsylvania), commissioned to examine the bee loss, reports: "We never saw so many different viruses all at once. Moreover, we have found fungus, flagellate and other microorganisms. This variety of pathogens is confusing." It is moreover remarkable that the excretory organs of the bees are attacked. Dennis van Engelsdorp assumes that an immunodeficiency underlies the mysterious phenomena (VAN ENGELSDORP 2007). Yet, he asks rightly: "Are these pathogens the causal stress factor or the consequence of an entirely different effect?“

It’s "extremely alarming", so says Diana Cox-Foster, member of the CCD Working Group, that the death is combined with symptoms, "which until now were never described like that". The immune system of the animals seems to have collapsed, with many bees suffering from five to six infections simultaneously. Yet dead bees are nowhere to be found (Spiegel 12/2007). (p. 28 f.)

The disturbances and damage observed are correlated by Warnke on a broad empirical basis, on the one hand, with the physiological equipment of the bees and their orientation to the magnetic and electromagnetic field of the earth and, on the other hand, with the derailment of the NO-systems and its thereby connected management of free radicals:

Bees and other insects, just as birds, use the earth‘s magnetic field and high frequency electromagnetic energy such as light. They accomplish orientation and navigation by means of free radicals as well as a simultaneously reacting magnetite conglomerate. Technically produced electromagnetic oscillations in the MHz-range and magnetic impulses in the low frequency range persistently disturb the natural orientation and navigation mechanisms created by evolution. (p. 32)

"A disturbed NO-system damages learning ability, scent orientation and immune system", reads the subtitle of chapter 3.10, which describes a central mechanism of action, also applicable to Man:

If the bees‘ NO-system is disturbed through the influence of technical magnetic fields, a case also observed in humans, they can no longer orient themselves through scent memory, and their all important learning process necessary for life no longer functions. However, as NO controls the immune system to a large extent, a disturbed NO balance will always affect the organism‘s immune defense. (S. 29)

The fifth chapter of the publication summarises the established knowledge regarding bees, numerous species of birds and Man as follows:

"for decades research results have been freely accessible which show that the natural electric and magnetic fields and its variations are vital conditions for the orientation and navigation of a whole range of animals. Likewise, for many decades it has also been wellknown in science that we humans depend on these natural factors for numerous vital functions.

Today, however, this natural information and function system of humans, animals and plants becomes superimposed by a never before existing density and intensity of artificial magnetic, electric and electromagnetic fields of numerous mobile and communication radio technologies. The consequences repeatedly predicted over many decades by the critics of this development should now no longer be overlooked. Bees and other insects disappear, birds avoid certain places and are disorientated in other places. Man suffers from malfunctions and diseases; and as these become hereditary, passes them on as damages to the next generation." (p. 40)

The publication has received worldwide attention since its appearance in December 2007. The renowned BioInitiative WORKING GROUP are waiting for a translation into English, "since there are very few popular publications in the English speaking area, that describe the total electromagnetic spectrum between the sky and earth with such a holistic and scientifically based stance" (according to Cindy Sage and Katharina Gustavs on 13.12.07). The author has been invited to give a presentation at `The Royal Society’ in London.

Our initiative of independent scientists, physicians and technicians has issued the publication as the first booklet in the new series Effects of the Mobile- and Communications Radio (www.broschuerenreihe.de). We advertise with these lines for the mediation of knowledge, because we concern ourselves with the health of Man and the environment – free of any profit interest.

We ask you, therefore, to also make this statement accessible to others - also in newsletters, homepages and in connection with own articles. If you are also interested in the publication (5,- EUR), we recommend in the attached leaflet the telephone, fax- or mail-order from die Bürgerwelle e. V., in Switzerland from Diagnose-Funk – from both suppliers there is also bulk discount for 10 copies or more.

Honey bees and microwave radiation - think outside the box!

Hi All
The first two articles are both from Art Kab. They are parts of communications that Art has addressed to other persons, but circulated for informational purposes. I believe that the quotes are very thoughtful and deserve to be read by many others. I happen to agree with Art's line of thinking which helps to explain why bees are dying and provides the probable cause of many illnesses which are occurring around the world.
The third article sent by Lavone, is a link to an interesting story about how bees are being badly harmed this new season (2008).

No! Not everything is caused by cell phones; but actually if you really do the research and use your brain to make logical inferences you will indeed realize that this microwave radiation now permeating the planet is in fact affecting all life on this planet - it is just a matter of thinking a bit more deeply about it!
Don't believe everything you hear or read on a superficial level and then stop there becoming just a tape recorder! Bees have survived on this planet for millions of years against a host of viruses and other pathogens. You need to really start asking why they are suddenly now dying out now on a global level. Is it really a virus that comes from China? Or Israel? Or Australia? You need to really start thinking about the ONE THING that they are NOW all being exposed to everywhere on this planet? And what is that?

Interestingly, with CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) -- aka Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) in the UK -- which started to appear in droves and has been increasing ever since around circa 1984 (mysteriously -- or NOT -- along with CCD and cell phones), there has usually been a new virus found every year -- what I call "the virus of the year" -- that is blamed on this illness.

First it was Epstein-Barr Virus, then Cytomegalo Virus, Coxsackie Virus, Human Herpes 6 Virus, Parvovirus B19, Coxiella burnetii, Borna Disease Virus, Varicella Zoster virus, Herpes Simplex Virus, Enterovirus VP1, Polio Virus, Echo Virus, Hepatitis Viruses, and so on down the line.

It has now been approximately 24 years since we started seeing this disease state in high numbers and they say-- at least anyway-- that they still don't know what causes this problem.

I suspect the same thing will happen with CCD. Every year they will come out with a new cause without ever finding the real cause. Lots of money will be spent barking up some tree and we will be no closer to the Truth than we are with CFS. Food prices will continue to rise and in some cases -- like we saw in Haiti -- causing riots and governments to topple. Pharmaceutical companies -- along with their counterpart, the cell phone industry -- will continue to rake in profits as more and more cell-phone addicts become sick with unexplainable diseases caused very likely to a large degree by their incessant exposure to microwave radiation.

Honey bee virus threatens nation's food supply, USDA says

http://www.axcessnews.com/user.php/articles/show/id/12286
Are honey bees really sick?

By Staff
(AXcess News) Washington - USDA researchers, in cooperation with scientists at two leading U.S. Universities, have found that the U.S. population of honey bees is threatened by a virus, which if it cannot be contained could severely hamper food production in the United States on crops that require pollination.
The honey bee virus is called Israeli acute paralysis and is responsible for the collapse of entire colonies.
So how serious a problem is Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV) that it would have the food industry buzzing about it? Researchers found an association between colony collapse disorder (CCD) in honey bees and IAPV, though they have been quick to say they're not positive that the honey bee virus is the culprit behind CCD, but all evidence points to Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus.
This is the first report of IAPV in the United States. IAPV was initially identified in honey bee colonies in Israel in 2002, where the honey bees exhibited unusual behavior, such as twitching wings outside the hive and a loss of worker bee populations. IAPV has not yet been formally accepted as a separate species; it is a close relative of Kashmir bee virus, which has been previously found in the United States.
"This does not identify IAPV as the cause of CCD," said USDA entomologist Jeffery S.Pettis, who led the research team for the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). "What we have found is strictly a strong correlation of the appearance of IAPV and CCD together. We have not proven a cause-and-effect connection."
Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus is a dicistrovirus that can be transmitted by the varroa mite, Pettis explained. It was found in 96.1 percent of the CCD-bee samples.
The next step is exposing healthy hives to IAPV and seeing if CCD develops.
CCD became a matter of concern in the winter of 2006-2007 when some beekeepers began reporting losses of 30 to 90 percent of their hives. While colony losses are not unexpected during winter weather, the magnitude of loss suffered by some beekeepers was highly unusual.
The main symptom is finding no or a low number of adult honey bees present with no dead honey bees in the hive. Often there is still honey in the hive and immature bees (brood) are present.
Pollination is a critical element in agriculture, as honey bees pollinate more than 130 crops in the United States and add $15 billion in crop value annually. There were enough honey bees to provide pollination for U.S. agriculture this year, but beekeepers could face a serious problem next year and beyond if CCD becomes more widespread and no treatment is developed.
The USDA reports that while there are native pollinators (honey bees came from the Old World with European colonists), honey bees are more prolific and the easiest to manage for the large scale pollination that U.S. agriculture requires. In California, the almond crop alone uses 1.3 million colonies of bees, approximately one half of all honey bees in the United States, and this need is projected to grow to 1.5 million colonies by 2010.
The number of managed honey bee colonies has dropped from 5 million in the1940s to only 2.5 million today. At the same time, the call for hives to supply pollination service has continued to climb. This means honey bee colonies are trucked farther and more often than ever before.
Honey bee colony health has also been declining since the 1980s with the advent of new pathogens and pests. The spread into the United States of varroa and tracheal mites, in particular, created major new stresses on honey bees.
There are three major possibilities behind the collapse of entire honey bee colonies that are being looked into by researchers. One of them is pesticides, but no common environmental agents or chemicals stand out as causative, though even fertilizer is now suspect. But in California, many almond growers have been switching to an environmentally safe liquid fertilizer manufactured by Itronics, Inc. (OTCBB: ITRO), a Reno, Nevada-based recycler of photochemicals.
Itronics' GOLD n'GRO liquid fertilizer is manufactured at the only plant in the US approved by the EPA and is shipped to distributors in California where it's used on a wide variety of vegetable crops, fruits and orchards due to its safer results for the environment and because it's economically better than the more expensive fertilizers manufactured from petrochemicals that are becoming more suspect of being a pollutant to groundwater nationwide, not just because it may be affecting colonies of honey bees. Itronics says it has not had its products tested on honey bees, so it could not substantiate any value, though the fact that it's economical and environmentally friendly is good enough reason to consider its use, say California growers.
In 2006, ARS and several university, state and industry participants agreed to sample affected colonies at various locations. That sampling revealed a number of disease-causing organisms, with most associated with "stress-related" diseases (Nosema, European foulbrood, viruses, and others), but no specific cause was determined. The magnitude of detected infectious agents in adult bees suggests that honey bees might be exhibiting some type of immunosuppression; however, researchers have yet to see any measurable effects on the honey bee immune system.
The ARS says that American beekeepers will soon have a new antibiotic with which to protect their colonies from American foulbrood disease, though no antibiotic has been developed for Israeli Virus as yet.
TYLAN Soluble (tylosin tartrate), produced by Elanco Animal Health of Greenfield, Ind., was approved for use October 20 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
American foulbrood is among the most widespread and devastating diseases of honey bees. Caused by the bacterium Paenibacillus larvae, the disease kills young bee larvae and transforms their remains into dark, shriveled ropes or "scales." These contain billions of spores that are easily spread by nurse bees. Although American foulbrood poses no human danger, severe outbreaks can weaken or kill entire bee colonies, according to Mark Feldlaufer, who leads the ARS Beltsville bee lab.

Hi Martin,
I listened to an interview on the radio last night regarding the declining bee population. It is even worse than before. They didn't mention EMF but it did come out in the conversation that the Africanized bees might be imported even though they would kill off the remainder of other bee populations. The written version of it is at:

The Disappearing Bees: CCD and Electromagnetic Radiation

Hi All
The crisis of honey bees dying around the world appears to be strongly linked by exposure to microwave radiation from cell phone antennas and other wireless transmitters. For some strange reason, researchers, the bee industry and governments are looking at everything but electro magnetic radiation as the cause.  Art Kab  has put together an excellent compilation of stories and facts about the crisis.
Please pass this information to friends, family members, beekeepers, researchers, environmentalists and others who should be looking closely at the ties between electro magnetic radiation and harm occurring to bees, and throughout our environment.
Martin.

Interesting that all these articles I have been reading about the disappearance of the bees have mentioned that it would affect the food supply. However, now that the food supply is being affected and food prices are rising around the world, there is no mention of the bees!

The Disappearing Bees: CCD and Electromagnetic Radiation

A timeline documenting the disappearance of the bees and Colony Collapse Disorder

1973

"In 1973 Karl von Frisch won the Nobel prize for a series of studies done in the 1940's on the navigational ability of the honeybee. He found that they utilized both a sun angle compass and a polarized light system for navigation. Perhaps more amazing was their ability to communicate the vector and distance of a food source to other workers in the hive by means of a "dance" that used both the sun angle and the gravitational vector. While the sun angle and polarized light were quite efficient they would be absent on cloudy days. However, the bees were still able to navigate with the same precision under those conditions. There obviously had to be a back-up system of some kind available to these animals that was totally independent of these two cues."

1974

"In 1974, the Russian researchers Eskov and Sapozhnikov found that bees generate electromagnetic signals with a modulation frequency between 180 and 250 Hz when they do their communications dances. (It is important to note that our GSM mobile sys-tem is modulated with 217 Hz). Hungry bees react to those frequencies by erect-ing their antennae [8]. Warnke reported that the communication impulses of the antennae when touched by a fellow bee can be measured with an oscillograph [9]."

Electromagnetism and Life

Robert O. Becker and Andrew A. Marino

This provides the theoretical foundations for the interaction between electro-magnetism and life, an interaction which had previously, and, to some extent, still is, presumed not to exist. In it, a chapter is dedicated to the role of EM radiation in the navigation of bees and other creatures. He opens with this summary:

"It is clear that the existence of the biological cycle phenomenon is dependent upon the living subject having precise knowledge of its position on the earth. Since it also appears that the earth's electromagnetic field is the most important single signal for this function, it seems likely that it is similarly involved in the migrational and direction-finding abilities of many animals. This possibility has been confirmed by recent studies."

Concluding with this warning:

"From all the foregoing reports it is obvious that the present normal earth magnetic field is an important parameter of the environment for living things. Changes in the fields in the past have been shown to exert evolutionary pressure and possibly even to have been associated with biogenesis. All living things are at present intimately tied to various aspects of the earth's field, and it seems quite possible that even more dramatic findings will be reported in the future. It must be kept in mind that the relationship is a subtle one, in contrast to the more obvious parameters of the environment. Since the present relationship between living things and the electromagnetic environment is the result of several billions of years of development, the question of the biological effects of abnormal electromagnetic parameters introduced into the environment by man's activities becomes of some importance."

"Honeybees have been dying in alarming numbers around the world since the mid-1990s. More recently, the problem has surfaced in North America, where the honeybee is not an indigenous creature, but was imported from Europe many decades ago.

Beekeepers in the Maritimes announced two years ago that they, too, were suffering high losses among their hives. While a 5% to 10% annual loss of bees is expected in the industry, beekeepers in P.E.I. and New Brunswick began reporting mortality rates of between 30% and 90%. Similar complaints have since emerged in Nova Scotia and Southern Ontario.

"Experiences of Beekeepers"

Prof. em. Dr. Ferdinand Ruzicka, who is a beekeeper himself and has contributed to a variety of beekeeping journals, has assembled a wealth of experiences from his own observa-tions and questionnaires to other beekeepers. He says: "The problems only appeared since several transmitters have been in-stalled in the immediate proximity to my hives." After this event, he published a ques-tionnaire in the Beekeeping Journal „Der Bie-nenvater" 2003/9 : The qu estion whether a mobile phone transmitter was within a 300m radius of the hives was answered affirmatively in all 20 replies. The question whether the bees displayed more aggressive behaviour after the in-stallation than before was answered af-firmatively by 38% of the respondents.
The question whether the bees showed a greater inclination to swarm after the in-stallation was answered affirmatively by 25% of the respondents.

The last question regarding unexplained colony collapse was answered affirma-tively by 63% of the respondents. According to Ruzicka's observations, the bee colonies are so weakened by the mobile tele-communications radiation that they become more prone to various diseases, a fact that can also contribute to colony collapse. This is because bees are considered to be very fragile creatures, just like butterflies whose numbers have also dramatically fallen during the last few years. However, according to Dr Ruzicka, 15 years ago, bee colonies were able to deal with a much higher degree of Varroa mite infestation than they are able to cope with today.

This is an extract from an article which appeared in the German press.

"After retiring, and now at the age of 76, Mr. Vogel has enjoyed 15 successful years of honey production. He was housing his bee colonies inside an old wooden truck and until a year ago the beekeeper had four bee colonies in hives behind wooden planks on the truck.

This winter Mr. Vogel witnessed the disappearance of all four of his bee hives. The bees had met a tragic and mysterious fate.

Siegfried Vogel believes microwave radiation from mobile phone masts is responsible for the loss of his bees. Vogel explained that the microwave radiation is coming onto his property from four directions. There are three mobile phone masts in Selbitz, three more in Sellanger, and recently a new mast was erected in Leupoldsgrün, adding to an increasing level of ambient background microwave radiation infecting the area.

Our newspaper tested the mobile phone reception in this area and found it to be "good" to "very good."

Vogel offers as evidence - that mobile phone masts have caused the demise of his bee colonies - the fact that his son's colonies, which were placed behind aluminum shielding, have survived. (Aluminum is known to block microwave radiation.)

Since all their bee colonies were equally protected from cold weather with polystyrene insulation in the trailer, Siegfried Vogel concludes that the aluminium surrounding his sons beehives must be shielding them from the radiation from mobile phone masts."

In the spring of 2005, many of the migratory beekeepers who work the California almond bloom discovered that their colonies had suffered heavy losses during the winter. Across the country, about one-third of all commercial honeybee colonies died out. The result was a pollinator panic in the Central Valley. Fees for renting beehives shot up from about $48 to as much as $140 per colony, a previously unheard-of amount. Beekeepers traveled from as far away as Florida and North Carolina to service California's almond groves. For the first time in 50 years, U.S. borders were opened to honeybees from New Zealand and Australia. The fate of a $1.2 billion crop -- more than half of all almond production worldwide -- rested on the slender back of the embattled honeybee.

The minutes of the annual meeting of UK government and beekeeping organisations records this clear reference to CCD, then referred to as Marie Celeste syndrome.

"Mr Craig reported that beekeepers in Scotland who had been treating varroa infested colonies (usually with Apistan) had been finding hives empty of bees, but not winter stores. Together with these unexplained colony losses ("Marie Celeste" syndrome)there were failures in queen mating. These events were happening particularly in oilseed rape growing areas. Whilst acknowledging that these could possibly be explained by the effects of viruses, for which the varroa mite provides a vector, he was concerned that we might be observing sub-lethal behavioural effects of systemic insecticides such as Imidacloprid, causing disorientation in the bees leading to an inability to return to the hive."

"European researchers have recently provided, for the first time, evidence of a significant decline in wild bee diversity in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands over the past 25 years. The scientists also observed that the loss of this pollinator's diversity is consistent with the loss of bee-pollinated plants. As many crops are directly dependant on insects for their pollination, the reported decline in the bee population may have severe implications for farming."

2006 Penn State University preliminary report

"Fall-Dwindle Disease":Investigations into the causes of sudden and alarming colony losses experienced by beekeepers in the fall of 2006.

"During the months of October, November, and
December 2006, an alarming number of honey bee
colonies began to die along the East Coast of the United States."

5 January

Penn State University Report revised with a forword declaring that the name "fall dwindle disease has been changed to Colony Collapse Disorder" and revealing the existence of a CCD working group consisting of members of Bee Alert Technology Inc.,Pennsylvania State University, the Florida and Pennsyvania Departments of Agriculture and the USDA Agricultural Research Service. With regard to the name it explains that "symptom's similar to those described for this disorder have been described in the past, and the condition has received many different names. These include autumn collapse, May disease, spring dwindle, disappearing disease, and fall dwindle disease. The CCD working group felt none of these names were appropriate for the current condition."

http://www.ento.psu.edu/MAAREC/pressReleases/FallDwindleUpdate0107.pdf
That seems an awful lot of names for something which has only been around for three months.

17 January 2007

Members of the CCD working group, meeting for the first time by conference call, report:

"Subsequent investigations suggest these outbreaks of unexplained colony collapse were experienced by beekeepers for at least the last two years."

As you can see a different timing is given for the appearance of CCD to that given by both the Penn State report just released and the Federal Department of Agriculture

"Where have all the bees gone?"

A article in New Scientist gives the following characterisation of CCD which shows just what a good name "Marie Celeste syndrome" was:

"It is a vanishing on the scale of entire cities. Late in 2006, commercial beekeepers in Florida began noticing alarming numbers of their bees had gone missing. Bustling colonies, tens of thousands strong, were emptying in a matter of days. Systematic searches for dead bees around the colonies mostly drew a blank.

Prepared Testimony of Diana Cox-Foster, Professor Department of Entomology at
The Pennsylvania State University before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture, Subcommittee on Horticulture and Organic Agriculture on Colony Collapse Disorder in Honey Bee Colonies in the United States.

Cox-Foster states quite categorically when, according to her, CCD first appeared.

"My expertise is a reason why beekeepers approached me in November 2006 with colonies deaths having unique symptoms. These were the first recognized instances of Colony Collapse Disorder."

Cox-Foster also announces a new line of investigation "in collaboration with Dr. Ian Lipkin and associates at Columbia University and the Northeast Biodefense Center" aimed at identifying the microbes and viruses associated with CCD colonies through genetic analysis.

"Are mobile phones wiping out our bees?"

This article appears in the Independent and is destined to stir up a hornet's nest. It cites the above-mentioned Laudau University study and quotes Dr Jochen Kuhn as saying it could provide a "hint' to a possible cause of CCD.

It also cites reports of CCD from beekeepers throughout Britain although these claims don't impress the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs who insist: "There is absolutely no evidence of CCD in the UK."

The official recantation of Dr Kuhn and his research team appears in the International Herald Tribune.

It now appears that this "small study" which "found that the electromagnetic fields similar to those used by cordless phones may interrupt the innate ability of bees to find the way back to their hive" was "too small for the results to be considered significant"
The article gives some indication of the kind of pressures which may have been experienced. One of the researchers remarked:

"Ever since The Independent wrote their article, for which they never called or wrote to us, none of us have been able to do any of our work because all our time has been spent in phone calls and e-mails trying to set things straight. This is a horror story for every researcher to have your study reduced to this. Now we are trying to force things back to normal."

The Institute for Science in Society intervenes in the debate with a Press Release "Mobile Phones and Vanishing Bees" in which it gives its view on the Landau team's work:

"Clearly the present findings need to be taken much further, but their significance should not be downplayed for a number of reasons. The findings are compatible with evidence accumulating from investigations on many other species including humans, showing that mobile phone radiation is associated with a range of health hazards including cancers [6] (Drowning in a Sea of Microwaves, SiS 34). Furthermore, bees are known to be extremely sensitive to magnetic and electromagnetic fields, and there have been many suggestions that they could be used as an indicator species for electromagnetic pollution."

Eduardo Pérez de Obanos, veterinary specialist with the Asociación de Apicultores de Nafarroa( Beekeepers Association of Navarra, Spain) comments in the Basque newspaper Gara:

[What I find strange is that the the Americans should raise the alarm now, since it is a problem from which we have been suffering throughout the world for several years. It is the same syndrome which we have here.]

He goes on to remind us that this "sindrome de despoblamiento de colmenas"(hive desertion syndrome) first appeared in Navarra in the winter of 2000-2001 and that he sees the disappearance of the bees resulting in an almost total "desertification of the ecosystem"

6 September 2007

Penn State(CCD working group) report appears in Science Express.(1)

The next day's press reports include one triumphantly and inaccurately entitled "Mobiles cleared of harming bees".(2) In fact, the investigation did not deal with the EM radiation case, assuming a priori the culpability of some form of pathogen. As Diana Cox-Foster put it the EM radiation thesis was "at very low priority".(3) The same press report erroneously claimed that the "virus can spread quickly through an entire colony, at which point the infected bees become paralysed and die outside the hive." The distinguishing feature of CCD is precisely that the bodies of the bees are not found near the hive.

The investigation correlated the Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IVAP) with CCD.

An article on the Penn State University website suggested this:

"Timing also may be the key to pinpointing the cause. The United States began allowing importation of bees from Australia in 2004, which coincides with early reports of CCD." (4)

But Diana Cox-Foster had publicly proclaimed that CCD didn't occur in the USA until the fall of 2006 and so we have a slight adjustment here to fit in with the new hypothesis. However, the relationship between the two events isn't just sequential, it is logical: the bees were being imported because the the local ones were being "decimated". But the way had been cleared to pin the blame on Australia.

In the course of the investigation all previous hypothesis had been ruled out. As one of the investigators put it: "the only candidate left standing was, in fact, IAPV.''(5)
"Other viruses and Nosema parasites had been suggested as the cause of CCD, but the researchers found that those pathogens appear in both CCD and non-CCD samples."(6)

Imported Bees Not Source of Virus Associated with Colony Collapse Disorder

"Imported bees not source of virus associated with Colony Collapse Disorder"

An article appearing in the American Bee Journal effectively undermines the Penn state findings citing another study which has established "without question" that the Israeli virus ,IPAV, has been in the United States since at least 2002. It therefore predates the introduction of Australian bees and the official dates for the commencement of CCD.
